Knowing what to expect can make mediation feel much less stressful.
Every mediation is unique, but the process is designed to be straightforward, respectful, and focused on finding practical solutions. Understanding what to expect before you begin can reduce uncertainty, answer common questions, and help everyone participate with greater confidence.
What is mediation?
Mediation is a voluntary process where a neutral third party helps people communicate, explore options, and work toward a mutually acceptable agreement. My role is not to decide who's right or wrong, but to guide the conversation, encourage productive communication, and help everyone find practical solutions that work for their situation.
Do we have to be in the same room?
No. Mediation can be conducted online using Zoom, in person, or, when appropriate, with participants in separate rooms. The goal is to create a comfortable environment where everyone can participate openly and respectfully
What if we don't reach an agreement?
Not every mediation results in a complete agreement, and that's perfectly normal. Even when every issue isn't resolved, mediation often helps clarify concerns, improve communication, and narrow the remaining issues. Many people leave with a better understanding of their options and a clearer path forward.
Will you contact the other party?
Yes. If you would like, I can contact the other participants, explain the mediation process, answer general questions, and coordinate scheduling. Many clients find this makes getting started much easier.
Is mediation confidential?
Yes. In most cases, mediation is confidential, allowing everyone to speak openly while working toward a solution. This privacy encourages honest discussion and productive problem-solving.
